Police in western Bangladesh said Wednesday they have armed villagers with bamboo sticks and whistles in an effort to deter Islamist militants from attacking people of minority faiths.
A court in Bangladesh on Tuesday sentenced six Islamist militants to hang for a bank robbery in April that killed eight people, lawyers said, but the defence vowed to appeal against the verdict.
Syrian warplanes attacked Islamist militants near the northern city of Aleppo on Sunday, both sides said, as the government tried to push back an insurgent advance in the area.
