The Muslim Brotherhood claims the electoral system is rigged to sideline large towns and cities where it is strongest in favour of rural tribal areas where conservative, pro-government political forces are entrenched. Polls closed at 1700 GMT after a one-hour extension, and the Independent Election Commission announced a turnout of 56.5%. Commission head Abdul Ilah Khatib said that final results and turnout figures would be announced today.
