Jockey Yanis Aouabed was in his elements as he booted home a double which included the success on Jelmud in the Al Fuweirat Cup, a Pure Arabian Stakes race, which highlighted the 50th day’s races at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club yesterday.
Al Uraiq was pushed to take over the running from the start with Jelmud in close attendance. Rounding the final turn, Al Uraiq continued to dictate the terms of the race. Once Jelmud was alerted to the task on hand, it ceased to be a contest. Jelmud sprouted a pair of wings and sped away from the field to win quite comfortably. Harran came from way behind to take the second place ahead of Saint De Faust.
Injaaz Stud’s Al Wajba asserted herself in the Thoroughbred Stakes for Fillies and Mares. The four-year-old progeny of Ghostzapper, Al Wajba who showed out in the paddock parade, was swiftly moved by jockey Yanis Aouabed to race a handy third as Misdemeanour settled down to lead the field followed by Poyle Judy. Poyle Judy headed briefly in the straight even as Watanee made a strong bid while Al Wajba showed out on the wide outside. The Ghazali trainee quickened nicely and had the race well sewn up inside the final furlong to win as she pleased.
Ibrahim al-Malki saddled Amphora (Gary Carter up) held on gamely from a fast finishing Sworn to win the Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 50 and below. Amphora raced prominently into the straight and took charge inside the final quarter mile and kicked clear and lasted out to win from Sworn who threw a scare with a powerful finish. Midas Moment was third.
Earlier in the day, Ghazali trained Al Moheeb showed remarkable transformation when winning the Local Thoroughbred Maiden Plate. Gerald Avranche on Al Moheeb found himself in front and he did not hesitate to lead the charge from the start. Napolean and Amirat Al Qaloob chased the front runner racing in close proximity. Al Moheeb came into the straight a few lengths clear of a quickly improving Amirat Al Qaloob but the former had something in reserve as he quickened for home in the final furlong. Napolean came up with a flourish but found the front runners slipping away from his reach. Having shed his maiden status, the four-year-old bay colt Al Moheeb looks to be in good form and is capable of entering the winner’s enclosure when saddled next.
Mubarak al-Khayarin’s Dartford led all the way and held off the challenge of Al Laheeb quite easily in the Thoroughbred Maiden Plate. The Mubarak trainee broke into a decisive lead inside the final furlong which in the end proved to be too big to bridge for his pursuers.
Mohammed al-Ramzani schooled Rich Mistress won the Pure Arabian Handicap for horses rated 40 and below, with ease. Rich Mistress made every post a winning one as he led from the start and won with something to spare. Ugo Des Vialettes found the front runner too speedy for comfort and had to settle for the runner up berth. Jamra raced prominently but failed to quicken when the heat was on and finished a tame third. Jockey Marco Monteriso rode a well judged race on the winner.
