QAFAC, TAMUQ sign deal for environmental research

Qatar Fuel Additives Co Ltd (QAFAC) and Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) have signed an agreement to study the environmental impact of residual chlorine and thermal discharges into the Arabian Gulf.

QAFAC is working to minimise the environmental impact of its operations under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment. QAFAC is keen to support research activities and work closely with academic institutions in Qatar such as TAMUQ. This project is the best example of mutual collaboration among industry, academic institutions, and the government. It will not only address an environmental issue but also include human capacity building through training and technology transfer.

The project will result in developing a scientific framework for sustainable strategies that address the environmental issues of seawater cooling and support Qatar’s objective of becoming a world leader in seawater cooling research.

TAMUQ has developed an innovative reactive transport modelling tool called 3D-SMART for assessing the environmental impact of cooling water and industrial wastewater discharges into seawater. This tool has been used for many industrial applications in Qatar and will be utilised for this project. This project will provide both industry and regulators with tools to evaluate the impact of cooling water discharge and provide solutions based on the scientific framework.
