Cultural initiative appoints officials

The Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture authorities yesterday announced the appointment of Hamad al-Eida and Aisha Ghanem al-Attiya as official spokespersons for the initiative in Qatar.

Al-Eida and al-Attiya, who have extensive experience in cultural and social affairs as well as media and communications, will act as the cultural exchange programme’s voice to the public.

Beginning his career in 1995 as a presenter and producer at Qatar TV, al-Eida has contributed to the organisation of several cultural and social activities throughout the country, including summer festivals. He has also hosted various programmes on Al Rayyan TV.

Since 2006, al-Eida has worked with the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) in the office of Sheikh Hassan bin Mohamed al-Thani, assisting him with his endeavours and trips around the world.

Al-Attiya, a graduate of Qatar University, joined the QMA’s Office of Strategic Cultural Relations in 2012 as a senior cultural diplomacy project specialist. Under the supervision of the director of the Office of Strategic Cultural Relations, al-Attiya supports the Qatar UK 2013 programme with the mission to develop mutual understanding of cultures between Qatar and the UK.

Al-Attiya is also involved in volunteering with Reach Out To Asia, where she is developing and executing activities to provide psychological support to patients at Al Rumailah Hospital.

The cultural exchange programme has been gaining momentum in both Qatar and the UK. The next few months will see the WISE/British Council Debate and the “Pearls” exhibition at Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which will foster an even more dynamic cultural, social and economic exchange between the two countries.

The QMA and British Council are developing a programme comprising over 70 events and exchanges, which educate and entertain people through a wide range of activities.
