Dodgers sweep three-game series

Matt Kemp returned from the disabled list with a vengeance, smashing RBI hits in his first three at-bats as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 9-2 to sweep the three-game series on Sunday.

Kemp (three hits) had a solo homer and an RBI double in a seven-run second and an RBI single in the fourth to make it 9-1. However, Kemp came up limping after he was forced out at home on a grounder to first with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Kemp did not return to the outfield for the last of the ninth. Los Angeles (50-47) has won 20 of its last 25 games.

Elsewhere, without his best stuff or command, Adam Wainwright still worked eight solid innings for his National League-leading 13th victory as the Cardinals edged the San Diego Padres 3-2.

Wainwright (13-5) scattered eight hits and walked two while Allen Craig made a leaping catch at the wall in left to rob pinch-hitter Jedd Gyorko of what would have been at least a two-run double to end the game. St Louis stayed two games ahead of Pittsburgh in the NL Central.

Matt Harvey threw seven sensational shutout innings while David Wright and Marlon Byrd hit back-to-back homers in the first inning of the New York Mets’ victory over Philadelphia.

Harvey (8-2), making his first appearance since starting for the National League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, was at his electrifying best and allowed three hits and no walks while striking out 10.

Left-hander Jeff Locke allowed just one run and one hit through six innings, and Garrett Jones homered, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to victory in the finale of a three-game series.

Locke (9-2) hadn’t pitched since July 8. He was scratched from his last scheduled start due to lower back stiffness which made him unavailable to pitch in the All-Star Game.

He walked two in the fifth where he threw a wild pitch that tied the game 1-1 but Pittsburgh scored twice in the seventh to regain control.

Three errors, two unearned runs and a less-than-stellar pitching performance by starter Jerome Williams contributed to the Angels’ undoing in a loss to the Oakland Athletics.

The A’s helped themselves with a nine-hit attack and another brilliant effort by All-Star pitcher Bartolo Colon, who held the Angels to four hits and improved to 13-2 as first-place Oakland pushed their lead over the third-place Angels back to 10 games in the American League West race.

Randall Delgado won a pitchers’ duel with All-Star Madison Bumgarner as the Arizona Diamondbacks salvaged one game on their three-day trip to San Francisco.

Paul Goldschmidt drove in one run with a first-inning sacrifice fly and former Giant Cody Ross provided the back-breaker with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth as the Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak and retained a half-game lead in the National League West over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Caleb Gindl’s leadoff home run in the 13th inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers an extra-inning victory over the Miami Marlins.

The home run was the first of Gindl’s career and came after starting pitchers Wily Peralta and Henderson Alvarez went deep into the game to set the stage for a fantastic finish.

Rookie right-hander Chris Archer pitched seven innings and Luke Scott snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run homer as the Tampa Rays held on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays to complete a sweep of their three-game series.

Scott extended his career-best hit streak to 13 games with the homer and when the next batter, Kelly Johnson, homered the Rays opened up a three-run lead.

Evan Longoria also homered for the Rays (58-41).

Chicago White Sox starter Jose Quintana can thank Casper Wells for his leaping catch in the eighth inning that helped him win against Atlanta.

Quintana left the game with a lead and an apparent foot injury in the sixth, and the edge was preserved when Wells robbed Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman of a potential homer in the eighth on a blast that was caught at the top of the wall.

Cleveland starter Justin Masterson one-hit the Minnesota Twins as the Indians avoided a three-game sweep.

Masterson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, his final inning of the day, and struck out eight Twins batters to lead the way.

Doug Fister pitched six effective innings, and Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks homered as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1.

Cabrera hit his 31st home run in the first inning and the Tigers avoided a three-game sweep.

Felix Hernandez continued his recent string of strong outings with six shutout innings to beat the Houston Astros.

Hernandez (11-4) has not allowed a run in his last two starts, spanning 14 innings, and has won sixth straight.

Nick Franklin had two hits, including a grand slam, while Dustin Ackley tied a season high with three hits for the Mariners, who swept their second straight series.

Colorado rookie third baseman Nolan Arenado singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth, and the Rockies scored what proved to be the winning run on a throwing error against the Chicago Cubs.
