Anniversary message from Vietnam’s Ambassador to Qatar Le Hong Phan, chairman of the Asean Committee in Doha (ACD), on the occasion of the 46th anniv

Ambassador Le Hong Phan: the current chairman of the ACD.

Together with hundreds of millions of people of Asean, we are proud to celebrate the 46th anniversary of the foundation of Asean.

On this occasion, on behalf of the ACD, I would like to present to all Asean communities in Qatar my warmest congratulations and best wishes.

Asean was established on August 8, 1967 by five member states – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand – and has since been joined by five other member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

Its aims are to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations, under the motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.

After more than four decades of efforts from its establishment, Asean has become an important political and economic entity, playing a central role for peace, security and development in Southeast Asia.

Asean is now one of the most dynamic organisations in the world with a combined population of more than 600mn and a combined GDP of $2.3tn.

Asean is also one of the fastest growing regions in the world with a high combined economic growth rate.

With its great achievements, Asean is proudly moving forward in the establishment of an Asean Community by 2015. And despite many challenges, Asean is confident of achieving this goal, thus realising the Asean dream of becoming a prosperous, peaceful and happy family for its people.

In the past year the ACD has organised numerous activities as part of its objective of strengthening solidarity among Asean communities in Qatar and to promote Asean-Qatar co-operation.

At the recent ACD meetings with the prime minister of Qatar and other ministers, the two sides once again reaffirmed the importance they attached to developing friendly relations.

On this occasion of Asean Day, I would like to call on all the Asean peoples in Qatar to do their best to contribute to the development of co-operation and friendship between Asean countries and the State of Qatar for the mutual interest of our peoples.

I also would like to extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani as the new Emir of the State of Qatar.
