Torii Hunter’s three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Detroit a 7-6 victory over Oakland.
Hunter, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, lined a 1-2 pitch to left centre for the game-winning home run, his 15th.
Joaquin Benoit (4-0) allowed two hits in the top of the ninth but didn’t allow a run to get the win.

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jason Vargas held the Tampa Bay Rays to two hits through the first seven innings as the Angels defeated the Rays 2-0.
The Angels pushed across a run in the top of the second inning when Luis Jimenez singled to left to score Hank Conger from second base, and another in the sixth on Kole Calhoun’s base hit and that turned out to be more than enough for the Angels starter.
The Rays were unable to deliver any timely hits. Sean Rodriguez and Yunel Escobar, batting fifth and sixth respectively, left a total of 10 Rays stranded on the bases. Evan Longoria continued his doldrums at bat, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
Longoria is now hitless in his last four games, going 0-for-15.
Daniel Murphy went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Carlos Torres allowed one run over six and 2/3 solid innings as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-3.
The Mets scored once in the third and twice in the fourth against Phillies starter Ethan Martin before piling on a trio of relievers with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth, four in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
The four-hit game was the fourth of the season for Murphy and the 10th of his career.
