Rubber farmers vowed to block all main highways through Thailand’s southern panhandle unless the government moves to prop up sagging prices, reports said yesterday.
The growers have been blocking the key Asian Highway in Nakhon Sri Thammarat province, 650 kilometres south of Bangkok, for the past nine days, as well as disrupting rail and road service to the south and Malaysia. A protest leader was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying the blockade would be expanded on Tuesday.
The farmers are demanding subsidised rubber prices, which have been falling on the international market this year in response to lower demand from China, the main importer of Asian rubber.
They are also want tax breaks and a subsidy for tree cultivation. The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry, meanwhile, announced plans to use more than 200,000 tonnes of excess rubber in government stocks as an additive in tarmac and other mixtures to repair and build rural roads.
