HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani owned Mamun Al Monlau winning the Kahayla Classic in Dubai.
A competitive field of eight runners have been declared to start for the Qatar Cup (Prix Dragon) at the Longchamp racecourse in Paris tomorrow. The 2000 metres race is a preparatory gallop for the forthcoming Qatar Arabian World Cup on October 6.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani owned Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz-Salalah de Monlau) has been rested well after his Kahayla Classic victory in Dubai in March. The Jean Francois Bernard trained champion colt has had a victorious outing on June 23rd where he beat Versac PY by a shorthead in the President of the UAE Cup - Coupe D’Europe des Chevaux Arabes (Group 1 PA) at the Saint Cloud race course. He has been a versaitile performer and will be a force to reckon with. Mamun Al Monlau will be ridden by jockey Christophe Soumillon.
HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Thani has three runners in the contest. Muntasar (Majd Al Arab-Danie du Cassou), Al Tair (Amer-Altese D’Aroco) and Farraaha (Amer-Moonlit) having the credentials to come good in this race. The trio are trained by Frenchman Alban de Mieulle. Muntasar is in outstanding form and is likely to go into the race as the favourite along with Al Mamun Monlau.
The four-year-old colt Muntasar won the Group I Doha Cup (Prix Manganate) at Deauville in early August where he beat the likes of Tabarak, Mushrae and Al Mamun Monlau quite convincingly. If he can repeat that performance, Muntasar will be the horse to beat. The Umm Qarn bred colt has the potential to be a serious threat in this highly competitive set. Jockey Pier Convertino will be guiding the fortunes of Muntasar.
The sparingly raced Al Tair started his training in Qatar as a two year old and started racing at the end of 2010 in Qatar. He later raced in Europe in 2011, winning the Group 1 Doha Cup and the Group II Qatar Cup in France. He was a creditable fourth in the 2011 Arabian World Cup. Will this be the day of reckoning for Al Tair, remains to be seen. Al Tair has Ioritz Mendizabal.
The other contender from Umm Qaran, Farraaha has been entrusted to jockey Oliver Peslier.
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Thani also has two notable contenders in the fray. 2012 Qatar Arabian World Cup winner Mkeefa (Amer-Nisaee) and Rathowan (Amer-Arc de Ciel) carry the hopes of Al Shahania Stud.
After her credible performance last year, which earned her the tag of National Champion of France in 2012, the Julian Smart trained Mkeefa has failed to impress in her recent campaign in Europe. However, she is a talented filly which can bounce back to form. Umberto Rispoli will be riding Mkeefa.
Trainer Smart would be pinning his hopes on Rathowan which has fared well in his recent outings. Before winning the Royal Cavalry of Oman Muscat Conditions Stakes at Wolverhampton, the Amer progeny had finished second to Djet Taouy in the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes. He is fine form and will be right there at the finish. Jockey Christophe Lemaire will partner Rathowan.
Moroccon challenger Djarnizam Maamora (Nizam-Djarnila Lotoise) of Jalobey Racing and Vulcain du Clos (Monsieur al Maury-Jamaa du Breuil) of Royal Cavalry Oman, are the other two contenders in this contest.
