Qatar University (QU) president Professor Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada, in recognition of her outstanding personal achievements.
Professor al-Misnad received the award, Dalhousie’s highest honour, at the installation ceremony of its new president Dr Richard Florizone on October 4, joining seven other 2013 honorary degree recipients.
Professor al-Misnad was commended by Dalhousie University for her significant role in the reform of Qatar’s educational system and her passionate advocacy for education in the Gulf area in general and for the education of women in particular.
She was further applauded for being a model for both men and women, inspiring and implementing substantive developments to public education.
Commenting on the award, Professor al-Misnad said: “I am proud to have been bestowed this honour and to join other distinguished recipients in accepting this award from one of Canada’s best universities. I look forward to building a relationship with Dalhousie to share common interests and goals that will be beneficial to both institutions”.
Professor al-Misnad also took part in a series of events during her visit.
This included an international panel discussion on the future of universities on October 4 which included her fellow award recipients, and a private luncheon in her honour, following which she attended the installation ceremony where she received her degree.
An evening reception in her honour was hosted by Dalhousie university vice-presidents, and later she was a guest of honour along with the new president, honorary degree recipients, and Dalhousie alumni at the Alumni Dinner organised by Dalhousie Alumni Association.
