Al Sadd made light of the challenge posed by Qatar Sports Club by cantering to 4-0 victory in their much-hyped Qatar Stars League clash yesterday.
Needing a victory to reassert their credentials after a loss and a draw in succession, Hussein Amotta’s boys came up with commanding performance which would go a long way in assuring Al Sadd fans that their team’s sudden dip in form was only a blip.
Almahdi Mukhtari, Hassan al-Haydos and Khalfan Ibrahim found the net for Al Sadd while Qatar Sports Club conceded an own goal, the ball taking a deflection from Brazil defender Douglas Foureira off a Nadir Belhadj shot.
The match was billed as a battle of wits between Qatar Sports Club’s Brazilian coach Sebastiao Lazaroni and Moroccan Amotta, but based on yesterday’s evidence there was no doubt as to who came up trumps.
Lazaroni was a frustrated man on the touchline as he screamed instructions to his players who simply couldn’t do anything worth mentioning during the entire match.
Al Sadd went ahead through Almahdi Mukhtari in the 13th minute, the 21-year-old rising above the defence to head the ball past goalkeeper Mohamed Mubarak off a perfectly-taken corner by Khalfan.
Al Sadd went into halftime leading by a goal but came back with renewed energy to swamp the Qatar Sports Club defence at will. The defending champions’, however, were lucky to consolidate their position. In the 50th minute, Belhadj worked his way up from the left before unleashing a powerful shot that seemed destined for the goalkeeper’s arms, but Douglas lunged at it with the result that the ball settled in the net, wrong-footing Mubarak.
Al Sadd then went up 3-0 in the 66th minute, al-Haydos picking up the ball 10 metres outside the penalty area and lobbing it over Mubarak’s head to score with ease.Khalfan then made it 4-0, a poor piece of defending by Shaheen Ali allowing the star striker to drill the ball home in added time.
Meanwhile, Al Arabi and Al Khor played out a 2-2 draw, while Al Rayyan’s woes continued when they were beaten 3-1 by Al Gharafa, Lissandro Lopez finding the net twice.
