Qatar-Canada trade rises

Qatar’s merchandise trade with Canada increased from $182.7mn (C$188mn) in 2010 to $371mn in 2012 on account of a surge in imports by Canada from Qatar, Doha Bank Group Chief Executive Officer Dr R Seetharaman said while highlighting bilateral trade developments between the two countries recently.
As part of the inauguration of its Canada representative office on October 16, Doha Bank hosted a knowledge-sharing session and luncheon in Toronto. Canadian and Arab bankers, economists and business professionals participated in the event.
Seetharaman, who spoke on “growing opportunities in the GCC” during the event, also stressed bilateral trade relations between Qatar and Canada. “Major imports from Qatar by Canada are mineral products and chemicals. Major exports to Qatar by Canada are plastics, vehicles and machinery items. In October 2010, Qatargas and Repsol Energy, Canada, signed a sales and purchase agreement to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Canada from the Qatargas 3 project,” he said. “Qatar Airways already flies Bombardier business jets. In April 2013, Qatar Petroleum International and the UK’s Centrica have agreed to buy gas and oil assets from Suncor Energy for CAD1bn. Qatar, GCC and Canada have synergistic opportunities.”
Highlighting bilateral trade developments between the GCC and Canada, Seetharaman said: “The GCC is considered a priority market for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. GCC-Canada bilateral trade increased from $4.66bn in 2010 to $6.51bn in 2012 on account of a surge in trade across all GCC countries except Kuwait. Imports from GCC increased from $2.23bn in 2010 to $3.20bn in 2012, mainly from Saudi Arabia. Exports to the GCC increased from $2.42bn in 2010 to $3.30bn in 2012, mainly to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.”
On the occasion, Seetharaman also spoke on the current global economic scenario and gave his outlook on the Canadian
economy and the banking sector.
Earlier, Doha Bank chief representative for Canada, Tony Sequeira, welcomed John Rodney, Canadian trade commissioner for Qatar, who spoke briefly on the government’s plans to engage with the State of Qatar so as to promote
bilateral trade.
