El Jaish scored a hard-fought 88-80 win over Qatar Sports Club in a first round league match of the Qatar Basketball League, being played at the Al Rayyan Sports Club yesterday. In the other match of the evening, Al Gharafa beat Al Arabi 82-69. |
It was a creditable show by the Jaish hoopsters, who after taking a 22-18 lead in the first quarter, hung on to the slender lead till the last.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Jaish increasing the lead to 14 points (45-31) despite some initial fightback by Qatar Sports Club when they drew the scores level at 29-29. Jaish kept up the pressure in the final two quarters to keep their slates clean.
For Jaish, Downey Devan Deangelo and Roberson Anthony Lamorse top-scored with 28 and 26 points respectively. The other notable contribution of 10 points came from Taggart Shawn Larell. The big efforts for Qatar Club came from Leslie Chauncey (28 points) and Bolding Melguan (23).
After a close opening quarter (21-17), the other game went Gharafa's way in the second when they took a healthy 45-31 lead. They boosted it further by the end of the penultimate quarter (68-41).
Arabi got some respectibility to their points total with a spirited show in the final
quarter but it was a little too late by then.
