HMC workshop seeks to raise awareness of attention disorder

More than 60 social workers and educational professionals, representing 20 local schools, recently attended an awareness workshop on ‘Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder’ (ADHD).

The ADHD Support Group, in conjunction with the Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Paediatrics Department, hosted the event as part of their mission to raise awareness of the disorder in the wider community.

The official website for ADHD (www.adhd.hamad.qa) was launched. The site is intended for providing the public with information about ADHD and answer questions and inquiries from the public through a dedicated e-mail address (adhd@hmc.org.qa).

The workshop was jointly inaugurated by HMC’s Paediatrics Department chair Dr Mohamad al-Janahi and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry consultant and ADHD Support Group head Dr Zahra Mejaly.

HMC Paediatric Neurology consultant Dr Mahmoud Fawzi explained that ADHD is a behavioural disorder characterised by developmentally inappropriate inattentiveness, impulsiveness and hyperactivity.

“Symptoms of ADHD in children can become apparent as early as three years of age,” he said adding: “Children with ADHD demonstrate lack of interest in or indifference to their surroundings and find it difficult to consistently start and finish things. This can create problems in an educational setting.”

Dr Mejaly stressed the importance of early detection and proper management of ADHD in children saying it would help with management of the disorder.

“HMC established a specialised clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in 2012,” he recalled while mentioning plans to hold another awareness workshop in January 2014.
