Rebeiro stars in El Jaish’s win over Gharafa

El Jaish’s Wagner Rebeiro (R) vies for the ball with Al Gharafa’s Mohamed Sayyar during their Qatar Stars League match yesterday.

El Jaish moved six clear at the top with a patchy 2-1 win over Al Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League yesterday.

Razvan Lucescu’s side huffed and puffed, messed up several scoring opportunities and conceded a comical goal before two strikes by Wagner Rebeiro helped them seal a crucial victory that took them to 24 points from 10 matches.

Looking for their first title, El Jaish have captured the imagination of the fans this season with some clinical displays that helped them win seven matches and draw three. The fact they they are the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far suggests they have the right mentality to succeed at this level.

El Jaish were under pressure in the opening exchanges, though, with Lisandro Lopez taking a few pot-shots at the goal. A fifth minute effort by Lopez saw the ball narrowly missing the target and later El Jaish goalkeeper Saoud al-Khater produced a fine low save off another shot by the Argentine pro.

At the other end, Rebeiro too fired some blanks before finally finding the target in the 45th minute. With just seconds to go before the interval, the Brazilian found himself unmarked in the penalty area to score with a low header off a measured cross from Murad Naji Kamal.

Lopez could have put Al Gharafa on level terms three minutes after resumption but he failed to stop the ball cleanly with only goalkeeper al-Khater in front of him. In the 57th minute, Lopez fired the ball across the face of the goal with the ‘keeper completely out of position.

El Jaish consolidated through a penalty in the 62nd minute after Said Haji Ismail brought down Kalu Uche and Rebeiro beat Al Gharafa goalie Qassim Burhan with a powerful shot.

Al Gharafa, however, looked like scoring any moment, but their only goal was the result of a gift by Mohamed Methnani who inexplicably tried to head the ball back to his goalie, but Nicolas Fedor showed quick reflexes to beat al-Khater to the ball and slotted home comfortably.

In other matches yesterday, Al Ahli and Al Khor played out a 2-2 draw, while Umm Salal held Al Kharatiat 0-0.

Al Sadd can cut down El Jaish’s lead by three points if they beat lowly Muaither today.
