A major fire ravaged on Friday at the Latin America Memorial auditorium in Sao Paulo after starting in the roof of the building and spreading.
Seven firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze, the news website G1 reported. Two of them were seriously injured fire department spokesman Mauro Lopes added.
The fire destroyed the Simon Bolivar auditorium, one of several areas in the building. No events were taking place at the auditorium on Friday.
Nearly 100 firefighters brought the fire under control Friday afternoon after battling it for more than three hours.
The fire at the 84,000sq m building designed by the late Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer broke out around 1.30 pm (1530 GMT), apparently due to a short-circuit in emergency lighting at the Simon Bolivar auditorium.
The Latin America Memorial auditorium was opened in 1989 as a cultural integration space for Latin American nations. It holds handicrafts from across Latin America as well as works of art, books, magazines, films and other material on the history of the region.
The Latin American parliament also meets in the building.
