Qatar meet Jordan in title clash today, eye maiden crown

READY TO FIRE: Qatar players in a huddle around their coach, Djamal Bilmadi (centre) during a training session yesterday, ahead of today's WAFF Championship title clash against Jordan.

Qatar would be eying for their maiden West Asia Football Federation (WAFF) Championship title when they will take on Jordan in the final at the Al Sadd Stadium here today.

Qatar coach Djamal Bilmadi believes his boys are full of confidence after their 3-0 victory over former champions Kuwait in the semi-final and said his boys are ready for Jordan.

“We are here to win the tournament. It will be a very tough game but we will do our best to win the trophy,” he said while addressing mediapersons yesterday, on the eve of the final.

Qatar's best finish in the championship is fourth place which they achieved in 2008 in Tehran.

The 37-year-old coach sees no reason why his team cannot emerge champions on their home turf.

“It’s good that we had many spectators in previous matches and I am hoping we will have good crowd support in the final. It motivates the players to play better. Jordan also has a good fan base here in Qatar and I saw this when they played Bahrain last time. There were many spectators supporting them,” Bilmadi added.

Commenting over his team's combination, he said: “In each match, I made minor changes to the squad and I will be changing it a little for the final too, but I can’t tell you which squad I will use.”

Jordan coach Hossam Hassan expressed his concern over possible drizzle during the game.

“Football players are used to playing in different types of weather conditions, but what matters is the pitch condition in the likely case of rain tomorrow. If it does rain, it will affect both teams," he said.

“Reaching the final is an honour for us and if we win tomorrow, it will make us all very happy. I hope that the best team wins,” he added.

Bahrain, who finished fourth in the last edition of the tournament, will take on Kuwait, winners of the 2008 edition, in the hard-liner match today.

“There were lots of positives in the previous match we played against Jordan. We are happy with the way the game went. Jordan didn’t have many opportunities in the last game, we gave them a hard time,” Bahrain coach Anthony Hudson said.

The Englishman added: “I will pick 11 players that I feel will win the match for us. I’m in a position where I feel I can make very strong decisions on which players to pick for tomorrow’s match.”

Responding to a question regarding why Bahrain didn’t score a single goal since the beginning of the championship, he said: “I think we are probably missing some good strikers, we are a very strong and organised team, and I feel it should only be a matter of time before we start scoring goals. We have to make sure the players keep belief in themselves.”
