Franck Ribery believes he can beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the World Player of the Year award, the Ballon d’Or, on Monday.
“I believe I have a great chance. The team and I performed very well in 2013,” the Bayern Munich and France winger told the German club’s website.
Ribery, who was already named European player of the year, added: “We will see what happens. I can only wait.”
Barcelona’s Messi won the award the past four years, and Real Madrid’s Ronaldo in 2008. The 2013 Ballon d’Or winner is announced at a gala of the ruling body FIFA in Zurich on Monday.
Ribery will fly direct to Switzerland from Bayern’s training camp in Doha, Qatar.
In contrast to the others challenging for the golden ball trophy, Ribery will arrive as a current holder of the Champions League, Club World Championship and European Super Cup, in addition to the German league and cup titles.
Munich coach Pep Guardiola praised Ribery as being a top professional.
“I have never seen a player with such character at this level, how he fights for his team. It is an honour for me to be his coach. Franck should travel to Zurich with a broad grin and enjoy it,” Guardiola said.
