Al-Attiyah meets former German chancellor
HE the Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah holding talks with former German chancellor and honorary chairman of the German Near and Middle East Association (NUMOV) Gerhard Schroder in Doha yesterday. Talks dealt with aspects of co-operation between the two countries.

The Qatari Labrtha falconers’ team has won three trophies in their debut at the ongoing Fazza Championships organised by the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Centre in Dubai. Saif al-Mohannady, head of technology of the Qatari Labrtha Team said they won first, second and third places in different categories.
Defence minister meets top US Navy official

HE the Minister of State for Defence Affairs, Major General Hamad bin Ali al-Attiyah conferred with Vice-Admiral John W Miller, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command in Doha yesterday.
Discussions at the meeting focused on issues of mutual concern, especially in military field.
The meeting was attended by the US Ambassador to Qatar, Susan L Ziadeh and a number of senior Qatari army officers.
Ministry uveils smartphone app in Urdu

The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning became the first institution to offer its smartphone application in Urdu.
Providing their service in a third language was part of the Ministry’s plans to expand its interaction with its clients, particularly as the services of the ministry affect the lives of all citizens and residents on a daily basis.
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning called on citizens yesterday to make use of the application by registering any complaints regarding food and hygiene.
The Ministry’s phone application allows citizens and residents to take a photo of their complaints and send it to the ministry at any time.
Photographic society to hold National Geographic expo

Qatar Photographic Society will organise, in co-operation with Katara, National Geographic exhibition tilted ‘Simply Beautiful’ on Wednesday. |
The exhibition will open at 7.15pm at the Society’s headquarters in Katara.
Meanwhile, the Society announced the names of winners of the photography contest which it had organised, in co-operation with the Emiri Guard, on the sidelines of celebrations marking Qatar National Day.
Abdullah Nasser al-Tamimi won the first position, Ahmed Adnan Alberdena won the second while Mohamed Ali Abdullah came third.
Some 69 contestants participated in the competition displaying 630 different photographs. The subject of the contest was: ‘The Emiri Guard’ as part of the military parade during Qatar National Day celebrations.
Qatar Photographic Society organises specialised courses including the basics of photography, digital photography, portraits, still nature, processing and printing of coloured and black-and-white films, image processing programmes, design, and editing images using photoshop, as well as workshops and exhibitions.
The Society also organises annual exhibition for its members and participates in exhibitions organised by other forums.
HBKU’s language centre to introduce new courses
The Language Centre at Hamad bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Translating and Interpreting Institute (TII) plans to introduce new programmes in English and Mandarin this year, it was announced yesterday. |
The centre currently offers multiple levels of training in Arabic, French, and Spanish to members of the Qatari community.
“Foreign language proficiency is an essential requirement in the process of building a globally reaching knowledge-based economy,” said Mounir Ouanaimi, director of the Language Centre. “Being able to effectively communicate in more than one language is imperative in well-rounded students, employable graduates, effective executives and business people.”
The courses tailored for non-native beginners, start in September, January and April each year. Last Fall, over 100 students enrolled in the various programmes and potential students are strongly encouraged to register for the Spring semester that will
begin on January 26 as slots are limited.
Replacement of Souq Waqif sub-stations begins
Qatar General Electricity &Water Corporation (Kahramaa) recently launched the first phase of the redesign and replacement of some of the distribution sub-stations in Souq Waqif. |
The project, according to Kahramaa, comes within its plans for the development and upgrade of the country’s electricity facilities. It is also meant to ensure the highest security and safety standards in the electricity distribution institutions, in particular those located in the country’s cultural destinations.
The teams from Kahramaa have carried out a survey. Further studies were held to disconnect the existing sub-stations.
The projects consist of three phases
including 10 sub-stations.
