Pakistan’s three-match winning streak came to an end after South Africa defeated the table toppers by three wickets yesterday, in the Qatar International Women’s Championship.
In the final league match of the tri-series - a dress-rehearsal before the two teams clash again in the final today – leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk’s second ODI five-wicket haul and unbeaten 43 by middle-order bat Shandre Fritz gave a morale-boosting win for the South Africans at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium.
After Niekerk’s effort restricted Pakistan to a meager 101 in 44.3 overs, Fritz maintained her composure in a nervy chase to take South Africa home in 41.3 overs.
Pakistan, who chose to bat in the inconsequential tie, were in trouble early after being reduced to 32 for 3 in the 15th over. But they recovered through a 42-run stand between skipper Sana Mir and Bismah Maroof, who made 14 and 30 respectively.
However, Van Niekerk dismissed Mir and Maroof in successive overs. Medium-pacer Yolandi Potgieter too joined the party claiming the wickets of Nida Dar and Batool Fatima which saw Pakistan get bundled out in the 45th over.
South Africa too were off to disastrous start as they slipped at 32 for 3 and then to 54 for 4. However, Fritz who came in at the fall of third wicket steadied the ship. She put on a 34-run stand with Dane van Niekerk, who contributed 12 off 50 balls.
After Niekerk was dismissed, South Africa lost two more wickets, struggling at 91 for 7. But Fritz, who faced 87 balls and hit five fours, kept her nerves intact to take her team home.
