Women’s Hospital is in the process of establishing specialised antenatal clinics for at-risk pregnant women, senior consultant Dr Najat Khenyab has said.
The move comes in the wake of an increase in the number of patients visiting the hospital due to high prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, hereditary diseases and multiple pregnancies.
“Women’s Hospital is continually working towards providing women with best care. We have already begun work in this area with our diabetes clinic which includes an endocrinologist, a gynaecologist and a nurse,” Dr Khenyab said.
Meanwhile, high-risk pregnancy issues, complications and global maternal fatalities were key topics discussed during a three-day symposium recently held for obstetricians and gynaecologists by the Medical Education Department at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
Nearly 140 HMC physicians and 15 participants from other countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Sweden,
attended the event.
Six senior specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Society of Medicine presided over the symposium held in collaboration with the Royal Society of Medicine for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the British Maternal &
Fetal Medicine Society.
The symposium also addressed pregnancies associated with blood disease, hepatitis and blood clot disorders.
Six workshops on preeclampsia in pregnancy, bleeding and
emergencies were also held.
In addition, participants at the symposium discussed associated pregnancy issues including digestive problems, heart and endocrine, thyroid problems, kidney and respiratory system diseases and how to treat a pregnant woman in maternal critical care unit.
“The symposium was very beneficial for obstetricians and gynecologists and Hamad Medical Corporation has decided to hold a similar conference every three or five years,” Women’s Hospital senior consultant Dr Khenyab said.
