Kris Commons has told his Celtic team-mates to aspire for greatness and aim to finish the Scottish Premiership season unbeaten. |
The Hoops have yet to taste defeat in 24 league matches this season and have an imposing 21-point lead over their rivals as they close in on a third consecutive title.
It is the Glasgow giants’ only prospect of a trophy this season after they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen last weekend having earlier crashed out of the League Cup.
However, Scottish international midfielder Commons insists the Parkhead club still have plenty to play for in the remainder of the campaign.
“We have plenty of positives and incentives for us to crack on in these next couple of games,” Commons said.
“We’re striving for greatness in the league now.
“We have a record to protect and we have a clean-sheet record in the league we are trying to maintain and increase, so there is plenty of motivation to keep us going throughout the year.
“We are on the unbeaten run and everyone will be looking to try and play as many games as possible as we try and get through the season unbeaten. But I know we have many tough games to go, home and away, and everyone will be looking to beat us.”
The next team attempting to end Celtic’s 13-match winning run in the league are St Johnstone, who make the journey to Glasgow’s East End tomorrow.
Hoops boss Neil Lennon could soon take his place in the history books alongside Willie Maley, Jock Stein and Gordon Strachan as the fourth Celtic manager to achieve three titles in a row and he has challenged his players to do it in style.
“The cup was important to us because we were the holders but we can’t dwell on it. We’ve had a brilliant season, with Champions League football as well.
“Some players are right at the top of their game. They have entertained all season, they have broken records and we want to finish the season in style rather than let it peter out.
“You can’t let one bad game out of 26 deter what you are trying to do.”
Elsewhere today, second-placed Aberdeen will aim to continue their fine run of form when they host St Mirren at Pittodrie, while third-placed Motherwell take on Partick Thistle.
Hibernian welcome Ross County to Easter Road and Dundee United face Kilmarnock at Tannadice, while bottom club Hearts have the chance for revenge when they travel to take on Inverness Caledonian Thistle, the side that defeated the Jambos in the League Cup semi-final two weeks ago.
