Johnson: to the rescue

Mayor vows to fund service for 7/7 victims

London Evening Standard/London

Boris Johnson yesterday pledged to fund for at least two more years a memorial service in Hyde Park for the victims of the 7/7 bombings in London.
Talks have also started on a larger event for the 10th anniversary of the 2005 terror attack which could include a service in Westminster Abbey.
Organisers of the annual Hyde Park gathering to remember the 52 victims of the Tube and bus bombings had feared it would not take place this year after losing National Lottery funding.
They said they had appealed unsuccessfully to City Hall and the government for the £5,000 needed. But after a Standard report on Monday, the mayor promised to find the funding, with the earlier failure to act being blamed on an “office cock-up”.
Johnson said: “There was never any question in my mind of City Hall not helping to fund a memorial event this year. The wishes of the 7/7 families are what matters here, and if the families want to continue with the memorial event in Hyde Park, then of course I will help to fund that event.
“Remembering the 52 innocent victims of 7/7 is not about politics or money, it’s about what is right.”
The Hyde Park service, due to take place on July 6, is organised by the Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball Foundation for Peace as part of its £150,000 Survivors for Peace programme which lost its lottery funding this year.
Nick Taylor, chief executive of the foundation which supports survivors of terrorism and the families of its victims, welcomed Johnson’s pledge, saying: “We know that the families and others affected will be delighted.”
Dame Tessa Jowell is expected to play a role liaising with families and survivors on next year’s service. The government is expected to pay most of the bill.
The Peace foundation was set up in 1993 by the parents of Tim Parry, 12, and Jonathan Ball, three, who were both killed by an IRA bomb.
