Drug awareness meet at Carnegie

The Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs (PCDAA) has held a drug awareness workshop at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ), Education City.

Lectures were given on the legal consequences of drug abuse and trafficking and how to identify individuals addicted to narcotics. The workshop was attended by students and faculty members.

PCDAA secretary Major Ibrahim al-Somaih said the workshop was held as part of the implementation of the National Strategy for Drug Control 2010-15 as envisaged by Weqaya and as part of an association between PCDAA and CMUQ.

The lectures were delivered by Ahmed Omar al-Aqib, consultant psychiatrist at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, and Dr Mohamed Abdul Aleem, senior consultant psychiatrist at Hamad hospital and member of the PCDAA.

The lectures dwelled on the social and psychological impact of drug abuse and the negative effect on individuals and society, in addition to an overview of the anti-drug Law No. 9 /1987. They also focused on safety measures that play a key role in the prevention of drug abuse, especially among the youth.

An awareness film was screened during the event, which showed how drug abuse could affect an addict’s family and those around him.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion between the lecturers, faculty members and students on related topics.
