The Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs (PCDAA) has conducted a drug awareness lecture for secondary students at Al Maha Academy as part its implementation of the National Strategy for Drug Control 2010-15 and National Programme for Drug Prevention. |
In his lecture, Dr Ahmed Zaki spoke on the various types and forms of drugs (natural, manufactured and synthetic) and discussed the factors that contribute to people becoming addicted to them.
He pointed out that the lack of religious faith, negligence of parents, curiosity for experimentation, and bad company were “some of the major reasons for moral deviation”.
Dr Zaki described smoking as “the gateway” to drug addiction and explained how a drug addict could rapidly turn into a criminal.
He also presented on the hazards associated with drug abuse and how these could affect health.
Stating that smugglers are constantly devising new methods of drug trafficking to avoid measures to stop them, Dr Zaki stressed the importance of “self-resistance” to addiction and consumption as well as the confidence to keep away from drugs as the first step in the fight against this trade.
At the end of the lecture, gifts were distributed to the students who managed to answer some questions on drugs and prevention.
