HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada: “The conservation of resources is a common responsibility”.
HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada has urged all residents of Qatar to extend their co-operation to Qatar’s conservation drive.
HE Dr al-Sada made the statement on the occasion of World Water Day, which is observed on March 22, and GCC Conservation Week 2014.
“World Water Day 2014 reminds us again of the importance of water for life continuity on earth. It tries to shed light on efforts exerted to provide fresh water resources and promote sustainability management,” HE the Minister said in a statement yesterday.
The occasion features events organised by various stakeholders around the world, including in Qatar, which suffers from water scarcity as it depends on desalination to provide 98% of its needs, the statement adds.
Qatar is pursuing a policy for the optimal use of resources as part of the Natural Resourses Management Strategy, which provides the roadmap to ensure its sustainability and protect the rights of the coming generations.
“The conservation of resources is a common responsibility, which calls upon us to increase energy efficiency, stop wasting and efficient use of water and electricity. Conservation is an investment for the future that should take root as a culture of the people,” HE Dr al-Sada stressed, adding that celebration of the GCC Conservation Week through various activities to promote the culture of conservation encourages the rational use and saving of resources.
Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari, president of Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), said they are committed to addressing Qatar’s need for high-quality water services by adhering to the best international and local standards. The focus is on “management of the environment is such a manner that there is harmony between economic growth, social development and environmental protection”.
Kahramaa observes World Water Day, which emphasises the significance of the global need to save, conserve and manage water resources responsibly for future generations. This year’s theme is “water and energy”. “On this significant occasion, I request all to save water for our future needs and generations,” al-Kuwari said.
World Water Day coincides with the GCC Conservation Week, which is celebrated by Kahramaa by holding various activities for students in particular to stress the importance of conservation in the GCC, al-Kuwari said in a statement.
HE Dr al-Sada said the prime target of the conservation campaign, Tarsheed, is to reduce per capita water and electricity consumption in Qatar by 35% & 20%, respectively, up to 2017.
Highlighting the impact of Kahramaa’s Tarsheed campaign, al-Kuwari said electricity and water consumption was reduced by 10% and 6%, respectively, in 2013 as compared to 2012. In addition, Kahramaa recently managed to increase Qatar’s strategic water storage by 126% after commissioning five water stations with a total capacity of 561MIG, he added.
Al-Kuwari also stressed the various other initiatives of Kahramaa to achieve water and electricity conservation.
