Qatar, along with the various other countries, celebrates the World Meteorological Day today.
The day is celebrated on March 23 each year. The day highlights the huge contribution that National Meteorological and Hydrological Services make to the safety and well-being of society.
Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority Abdul Aziz al-Nuaimi said celebrations marking the World Meteorological Day focus each year on a major theme. He said the theme chosen this year is: “Weather and climate: engaging youth.”
Al-Nuaimi said that this year’s theme stemmed from the role of youth in shaping the future of the earth and attaining sustainable development through their ability to realise change, innovation and provision of new visions when addressing problems and to put forward solutions based on knowledge and awareness of facts and developments related to weather and climate and their effects on the life of everyone living on this planet.
Al-Nuaimi added that the patterns of global consumption and human activities currently prevailing form effective factors in climate change, which is a real challenge that should be confronted due to its direct impact on people’s lives through many phenomena, such as the lack of food and water, spread of diseases, scarcity of resources and forced migration.
Al-Nuaimi added that the youth category constitutes the majority of the population in many countries of the world, especially in developing nations, “and for this reason the option of the World Meteorological Organisation is to work with the largest social group in the world which is estimated at about 2bn young persons.
