The State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan share a strong brotherly bond and have strong ties that historically go a long time back, HE Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, told Gulf Times.
He was expressing his views on the occasion of Pakistan’s National Day at a reception organised by the Pakistan embassy on March 23.
“Pakistan is a great Muslim country that is very near to our hearts. Their culture, language and religion is similar to what we have in the Gulf region. We have close ties between our two countries that historically go a long time back,” he said.
The senior Qatari official also said Pakistanis in Qatar are welcomed and appreciated by all. “Pakistanis in the State of Qatar enjoy working here and are respected by the Qatari population.”
He said Qatar hoped that Pakistan would achieve greater heights. “We respect the history of Pakistan, we respect it as a Muslim country, we respect the Pakistani advancement in the Muslim world, their economy, their energy, their army, their security and politics.”
The senior minister also shared his personal story and said he studied for one whole year in Pakistan in 1984, in the “very good” city of Nowshera. “I enjoyed many friendships there and it was like living with my family there. I’ve also been to Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Risalpur and even the tribal areas,” he added.
A large number of Qatari dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps and leading Pakistani community members in Qatar attended the Pakistan Day event.
HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah al-Thani, Sheikh Fahad bin Abdulrehman bin Hamad al-Thani and Sheikh Thani bin Jassim bin Faisal al-Thani, Assistant Chief of Staff, Qatar Armed Forces, were among the prominent Qataris who attended the event.
The national anthems of both countries were played at the event, followed by a brief speech by the Pakistan embassy charge d’affaires, Malik Mohamed Farooq, who highlighted the significance of March 23 in the history of Pakistan.
Farooq thanked HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani for their support to Pakistanis in Qatar.
