A total of 70 Indian expatriates have died in Qatar so far this year including five in the Duhail gas explosion, according to information registered with the embassy, the monthly open house was told yesterday.
A total of 26 deaths have been registered during March alone. The number of deaths registered in the embassy over the last four years is as follows: 233 in 2010, 239 in 2011, 237 in 2012, and 241 in 2013.
At the open house held at the embassy to address urgent consular and labour issues, Ambassador Sanjiv Arora and other officials met the complainants, discussed their problems and assured them that the embassy would actively follow up their cases with the Qatari authorities.
An embassy team visited the Central Prison and the Deportation Centre during the week to inquire about the welfare of Indian detainees. Currently there are 67 Indian nationals in the Central Prison and 166 in the Deportation Centre.
The Labour and Community Welfare Section of the embassy has received 872 complaints so far this year. A total of 3,385 complaints were received in 2012, while the number was 3,558 in 2013.
Hajikka essay competition
The Indian Community Benevolent Forum will organise a Hajikka Memorial Essay Competition in April, ICBF vice president Baby Kurian announced at the embassy open house. The competition, to be held in association with Indian schools in Qatar, is intended to spread awareness about the late M V Abdul Khader Haji’s services to the community.
