A total of 89 Indians died in Qatar as of yesterday, according to the statistics released by the Indian embassy in Qatar. In April alone, 18 Indian nationals died. In 2013, a total of 237 Indians died in the country while the number in 2012 was 241.
The figures were provided yesterday after the monthly ‘open house’ for the community at the Indian embassy to address their consular and labour issues.
Indian Ambassador Sanjiv Arora and other embassy officials met with the complainants and assured them that the embassy would follow up their cases with the authorities concerned.
Kareem Abdulla, president of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), also attended the event.
An embassy team visited the Central Prison and the Deportation Centre last week to enquire about the welfare of the Indian detainees there. The total number of Indian nationals in the Central Prison and the Deportation Centre currently stands at 80 and174, respectively.
The labour and community welfare section of the embassy received a total of 1,176 complaints from January till yesterday. The number of complaints received in 2013 was 3,385 while in 2012, 3,558 complaints were received.
The embassy issued 15 emergency certificates (ECs) this month for travel for detainees at the Deportation Centre. The embassy’s follow-up facilitated the return of 34 Indian nationals from the Deportation Centre so far this month.
The ICBF continues to help Indian workers through its welfare measures by providing air tickets, medical help and financial assistance to those in need.
The ICBF, in association with the Indian Schools, organised the first ICBF Hajikka Memorial Essay Competition last week as a tribute to the exemplary community services of late M V Abdul Khader, popularly known as Hajikka.
A total of 130 students from eight schools participated in the competition. The winners of the competition were awarded certificates and prizes yesterday.
