Whenever Ebru Aykas displays her products in market fairs, they are often mistaken as candy or chocolate. Aykas is an expert in making decorative handmade soap. |
“It’s quite funny because they’re always mistaken as chocolate,” said Aykas, proprietor of Angel Baby.
Gulf Times caught up with Aykas yesterday at QatArt’s second handmade market where she showcased her other creations such as baby tutus, flower crowns, and handmade gifts for newborn babies, weddings and birthdays.
Aykas said “soap buckets” are ideal gifts for newborn babies. She explained that hospitals discouraged the bringing of flowers during visiting hours to prevent babies from getting allergic reactions from the pollen.
Soap buckets are colourful decorative sculptures arranged in a “bouquet”. But instead of a vase, the bouquet is placed in a bucket for aesthetics.
Along with multicoloured flower crowns, Aykas said decorative handmade soap is popular in Turkey, which was where she took a course on the art of soap making.
“Henna night and weddings are also the best time to give decorative handmade soap,” Aykas noted.
According to Aykas, “business is good” and added that she was in talks with a shop owner that would feature Angel Baby products. She added that there were also plans to collaborate with a school, Inspiration Station, where she would provide workshops in soap making.
