Educate A Child supports 2mn out of school children

Educate A Child (EAC), a global programme of Education Above All ( EAA)  has supported more than 2mn Out Of School Children (OOSC) by this academic year, a senior EAC official disclosed yesterday.

EAC aims to reach out to 10mn OOSC by the end of 2015-2016 academic year. EAC is a global programme launched by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the chairperson of EAA, in 2012 to significantly reduce the number of children worldwide who are denied their right to education.

Marcio Barbosa, CEO of EAA, revealed the details of the programme at a press conference at the Student Centre of the Education City yesterday. Fahad al-Sulaiti, deputy CEO of EAA, and Dr Mary Joy Pigozzi, managing director of EAC, were present during the press conference.

Barbosa said: “EAC has 44 approved projects and operates in 24 countries through these projects. EAC, within 18 months of its existence, has supported more than 2mn out of school children through these projects. We expect that when these projects are complete, they will reach a total of 4.6mn OOSC.”

The official said: “We are planning to reach out to other countries in the coming months. We are focusing on countries such as Nigeria, Afghanistan, Philippines, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Yemen where there are a large number of OOSC. We have invited the officials from 15 countries to discuss this issue and explore ways to partner with these countries. When we launch new projects in some of these countries we will be on track to reach 10mn children by the end of the 2015/16 school year.”

Barbosa also pointed out that the entire project is funded by EAA as well as the partnering organisations. “On an average 35% of the cost is covered by EAA and  65 % is covered by the partners. We are spending a large amount of money but still it is not enough and we need to mobilise more money. We need additional funds to fully work out the projects and realise the goals.”

Al-Sulaiti clarified that the programme is completely independent of Qatar Foundation. “Many times, EAC is treated as a Qatar Foundation programme. EAC is a programme under EAA and it is totally independent of Qatar Foundation. EAC is one of the three programmes under EAA.”

EAC works with many types of partners to accelerate the identification, enrolment and completion of a quality primary education for a significant number of out of school children. The different types of partners are strategic partners, implementing partners, advocacy partners and resource partners.

EAC is an extension of  HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s  mandate as a Unesco Special Envoy on Basic and Higher Education, a UN Millennium Development Goal Advocate and a Steering Committee member of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Global Education First initiative.
