Indian held for selling pirated movies

Police in Nepal have arrested an Indian national on the charge of violating domestic copyright act for selling Indian, Nepali and English movies protected under the act.

Dipak Kumar Gupta from Sitamarhi district of India’s Bihar state, who rented a flat in Kathmandu to sell protected Indian, Nepalese and English movies in violation of the copyright act, was held by police on Monday evening.

Police raided the flat and recovered three machines for copying movies, DVDs, various posters of Indian, Nepali and English movies, four computers, 2,500 CDS of Nepali, India and English movies along with 100 other blank CDs.

Yesterday, the local Kathmandu district court remanded him in police custody until Friday and he has been charged under the Copyright Act, 2002, of Nepal.

If Gupta is found guilty, he can be fined anywhere between Rs10,000 and Rs100,000 or may be given a six-month jail term or both.

This is the first time that an Indian national has been arrested here on the charge of possessing such hi-tech technology involved in violating the copyright act, Kathmandu district police claimed.
