A three-day training workshop on disaster recovery planning, organised by the Permanent Emergency Committee in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), began yesterday at the General Directorate of Civil Defence. |
Forty-five officers from different ministries and government bodies are participating in the workshop that was inaugurated by PEC member Brigadier Nasser Abdullah al-Nasr, on behalf of the Director General of Public Security and PE chairman, Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi.
Brigadier al-Nasr said the main objective of the workshop is to develop skills of the national cadets and government bodies to effectively address emergency situations and reduce losses.
Sanjay Bhatia of International Recovery Platform (UNISDR), said that the UN involvement in the workshop comes as part of the UN support for countries for disaster risk reduction and the constructive co-operation with countries to respond to natural disasters and to support their humanitarian work, and to exchange experiences in this regard.
The director of the Operations Department of GDCD and secretary of the PEC Brigadier Hamad Othman al-Duhaimi stated that the State of Qatar was proud to work in co-ordination with UNISDR.
PEC assistant secretary Major Ahmad Abdullah al-Abdullah said that this workshop was conducted within the framework of the national programme 2011-2016 for disaster reduction and preparedness. The workshop will cover topics including infrastructure and governance, shelter, scenario planning, disaster management system in Japan, the financing of disaster recovery, and pre-planning for disaster recovery.
