Total Research Centre Qatar celebrates safety milestone

Chalmin (left) and Julien: Safety — the topmost priority.

Total Research Centre Qatar (TRC-Q), which is located in QSTP, achieved a milestone of ‘zero lost time injury’ (LTI) since its opening in 2009.

A celebration was recently held at Total’s TRC-Q offices to mark the five accident-free years achievement.

The ceremony commenced with welcome speeches by Total E&P Qatar’s top management who reasserted the importance of safety within the company. Safety movies were also screened.

“Safety should not only be our No 1 prority, but should be in our culture. We are constantly vigilant in maintaining a no-accident record in all our facilities,” said Total E&P Qatar managing director and group representative Guillaume Chalmin.

“Every single employee has a role to play in sustaining a safe working environment. We are happy with regards to the increasing awareness and commitment made by all our employees for HSE,” he said. Dr Philippe Julien, director, TRC-Q, also thanked all his team members for their commitment to safety. He insisted on the fact that the responsibility of employees towards safety should not be a duty, but part of the safety culture and attitude.

“There is a risk, which is inherent to our research laboratory activities. That is why we must continuously question our procedures and processes to improve them and work in an always safer way”, Julien said.

Total Research Centre Qatar focuses on three major activities — research and development of new technologies, high-level professional trainings, and technical assistance for local oil and gas companies. Due to the nature of work at TRC-Q, safety is the topmost priority which is incorporated in the day to day work of the company.

Total’s strict HSE standards include frequent surveys, campaigns and table top exercises. They recently launched a ‘Speak up for safety campaign’ with the motto ‘An anomaly reported today is an incident prevented tomorrow’.

It encourages employees to remain vigilant about any anomalies in the workplace, and to report the same to the concerned officials.
