Prince Mashaal bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Governor of Makkah Al Mukarramah, on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, yesterday washed the Holy Ka’aba.
Prince Mashaal and his escorts washed the Holy Ka’aba from inside with Zamzam water mixed with rose perfume and oud rinsing and cleaned its interior walls with pieces of cloth wet with this water.
A number of ministers, senior officials, the Islamic diplomatic corps members accredited to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the servants of the holy mosque attended the washing ceremony which takes place twice a year: the month preceding the fasting month of Ramadan and in mid-Muharram (the month after Dhul Hijjah when Muslims perform Haj).
The House of Allah The Almighty is given a new Kiswa (covering) on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah when pilgrims proceed to Arafat for the main event of the Haj.
The washing ritual of the Ka’aba begins with the performance of two raka’hs (payer units) inside the cuboidal structure. The Ka’aba is 14m high from the eastern side, 12.11m from the western and southern sides, and 11.28m from the northern side. Its inside floor is laid with coloured marble. Its ceilings are supported by three wooden columns, each with a diameter of 44cm.
