Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday recovered another cache of ammunition and a machine gun barrel in the Satchharhi jungles in eastern Habiganj district near the border with Indian.
RAB-9 commander Sana Shaminur Rahman told newsmen that the search operation, which started yesterday morning, was still going on.
The RAB recovered 56 anti-artillery shells, 633 bullets for SMGs and a machine gun barrel, Rahman said.
On June 3, around 200 high explosive anti-tank weapons with as many chargers were recovered in a daylong drive in the Satchharhi forest.
The cache was found inside bunkers dug deep in the
hillocks.
Even more arms were found the following day at the seven bunkers atop hillocks inside the forest, which are about 3km from the Indian border in Tripura state.
So far, a rocket launcher, four machineguns, a rifle, five machinegun barrels, 222 anti-tank weapons with 248 charges, 19 machinegun drum chains, 19 magazines, 12,987 bullets of various kinds and large amounts of weapons lubricant have been recovered.
The recovered cache is similar to the arms haul in Bogra, in 2003, and the 10-truck Chittagong arms haul in 2004, according to RAB.
It has been proved in court that the 10 trucks of arms recovered in Chittagong were brought in for Assamese separatist group United Liberal Front of Asom (ULFA).
ULFA military wing chief Paresh Barua was sentenced to death in Bangladesh in the case.
The place where the weapons were found is thought to be part of what was once the headquarters of the now-weakened All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF).
The ATTF is currently a shadow of its former self and its chief, Ranjit Debbarma, is now standing trial in his home state Tripura on several charges of murder and
abduction.
Debbarma was close to Barua, who is now in hiding.
RAB officials said the driver of the truck in Bogra in which the bullets were found came from this part of Habiganj.
Although evidence seems to point to the two Indian separatist groups, RAB is not willing to draw any conclusions as yet.
