A dominant start by Atlanta Braves right-hander Gavin Floyd came to an abrupt end due to an apparent elbow injury, putting a damper on the Braves’ 3-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. |
Floyd, who missed nearly all of 2013 and the start of 2014 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, was locked in a pitching duel with Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann, allowing just two hits through six innings. But after the first pitch of the seventh inning, his 64th of the game, Floyd (2-2) called for the Atlanta trainer, flexed his
elbow and then walked off the mound. Third baseman Chris Johnson drove in all three runs on fourth, and eighth inning singles.
David Phelps pitched seven effective innings as the New York Yankees lifted three sacrifice flies and stole four bases while extending their home winning streak over the Toronto Blue Jays to 16 games with a 6-4 victory.
Phelps (3-4) helped the Yankees win for the seventh time in nine games by allowing two runs and six hits while equaling his longest outing of the season. He had a season-high seven strikeouts, walked two and threw 72 of his season-high 115 pitches for strikes.
“We did a nice job of keeping the line moving,” said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. “Right there in the middle of the lineup. We were able to add on a run late in the game. That was good to see.”
Anibal Sanchez held Kansas City to one first-inning run in seven innings despite failing to record a strikeout for the first time in his career as the Detroit Tigers ended the Royals’ 10-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory.
Right fielder J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead, solo home run in the fourth and first baseman Miguel Cabrera smacked a run-scoring double for Detroit
(37-32). Left-hander Danny Duffy (4-6) took the loss for the Royals (39-33) despite limiting the Tigers to three hits in seven innings. Nick Swisher’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Cleveland Indians a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th, but designated hitter Swisher belted his fifth home run over the wall in right field with the bases loaded to end the game. Rookie left-hander Kyle Crockett (1-0) picked up his first major league win. With two outs in the top of the 10th Albert Pujols punched a single, scoring two runners and giving Los Angeles a 3-1 lead.
Pirates 4, Reds 3 (12 innings)
Russell Martin drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning to force in the winning run as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3.
Left-hander Tony Cingrani (2-8) hit shortstop Clint Barmes with a pitch and walked Martin, the veteran catcher, on five pitches to force in the winning run as the Pirates snapped a three-game losing streak.
Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco hit a solo home run, his 10th of the season, to left field off Pirates closer Jason Grilli with one out in the ninth inning to tie the score at 3-3 and force extra innings. Barmes had the eighth four-hit game of his career but first since 2009. Milwaukee right-hander Yovani Gallardo continued his mastery of Arizona and third baseman Aramis Ramirez had two hits and drove in a run in the Brewers’ 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks. Gallardo (6-4) gave up one run on five hits in seven innings to improve to 8-0 in his career against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Ramirez doubled and scored in a two-run fifth inning and singled in a run in the sixth off right-hander Chase Anderson (5-2), who gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) in six innings.
