Qatar organisations in project to help flood victims in Sudan

Qatar Charity (QC) and the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa have implemented a QR800,000 project for those affected by the recent floods in Sudan.

The project is part of a strategic partnership between the two organisations and will benefit more than 23,000 people in River Nile State after floods led to the destruction of homes, public facilities and services.

QC oversaw the distribution of relief to the beneficiaries and was joined by Omar Ahmed Sheikh, Minister of Agriculture in River Nile State; the mayors of Shendi and Metema; Ibrahim Zainal, QC assistant executive director for International Development; and Hammad al-Fadenei, director of the office of the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa in Doha.

The distribution was launched at the entrance to the city of Shendi in co-ordination with the Humanitarian Aid Commission and the government of River Nile State in a ceremony attended by a number of state officials, representatives from the two organisations and beneficiaries.

The distribution included 5kg of lentils, 5kg of sugar, 5kg of flour, 2litres of oil, 10 bags of noodles and other items such as salt and tomato paste.

Goods like tents, tarpaulins, blankets, mattresses and plastic sheeting were also distributed, in addition to cleaning and sterilisation items like soap.

“Qatar Charity’s relief in Sudan stems from our sense of fraternal and humanitarian duty, which requires us to do all we can for the distressed,” Zainal said.

Zainal stressed that QC and the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa would continue their efforts in Sudan in general, and River Nile State in particular, through the financing of co-operatives for compressed brick machines in co-ordination and partnership with the Humanitarian Aid Commission in order to provide constructive alternatives that will help rebuild destroyed homes and restore those that have been partially damaged.

QC delegation member Abdullah Yakoub Mullah and Hamad Hussein Yaf’I expressed happiness at the opportunity to take part in the initiative.

Al-Fadenei said he was pleased with the partnership and the resulting project which, he said, had contributed to lending a helping hand to those affected by the natural disaster.

The minister of agriculture, too, expressed satisfaction at the initiative, saying: “The state welcomes the efforts made by Qatar Charity and the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa towards their brothers in Sudan.”

The beneficiaries, on their part, appreciated the necessary and timely support.

QC provided QR500,000 funding to the project while the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa provided QR300,000.
