Experts have claimed that a certain craving for expensive luxury items such as signature shoes, watches, and sports cars could be considered as a psychological disorder, local daily Arrayah has reported.
The penchant for luxury, especially among young men, was raised by experts in economy, fashion, and sociology. They warned that there is an absence of safety nets when spending or a “culture of ideal shopping.”
The experts also noted that young men today are rash when spending on mobile phones, sunglasses, or clothes without considering financial restrictions or interest rates of their bank loans.
In social media, most young men who have just arrived from vacations abroad have been posting photos of expensive items. One gentleman posted a photo of a bag worth QR50,000 while another uploaded a picture of his luxury watch that cost him QR180,000.
In some cases, young men would prefer driving luxury cars rather than finding a woman to marry. Other experts have blamed banks for offering huge loans to young men, who later fall in lifelong debt trap.
While considered a psychological disorder, “shopaholics” can seek counselling from groups like Shopaholics Anonymous or psychotherapists and psychologists.
