The Indian embassy in Doha has received 2,792 complaints so far this year, the monthly community house was informed yesterday.
In the previous years, 3,385 (2012) and 3,558 (2013) complaints were received by the labour and community welfare section.
At the community house yesterday, ambassador Sanjiv Arora and other senior officials assured the complainants of further follow-up with the local authorities and
necessary action.
According to the embassy, 85 Indian nationals are currently serving varied sentences in the Central Prison and another 143, who are awaiting repatriation, are housed at the Deportation Centre.
Kareem Abdullah, president of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), functioning under the aegis of the embassy, also attended the open house.
The embassy registered a total of 26 deaths in the month of August and 17 deaths so far this month. The total number of deaths registered so far this year was 204.
In 2012, the embassy registered 237 deaths while 241 deaths were reported last year.
On the basis of the requests received from the Qatari authorities for travel documents for detainees at the Deportation Centre, the embassy has issued 28 emergency certificates (ECs) so far this month.
The mission facilitated the repatriation of 64 Indian nationals from the Deportation Centre till now.
The ICBF continues to help the needy and deserving workers through various welfare measures, including provision of air tickets, financial assistance and
medical help.
Besides, the ICBF also provided six air tickets to Indian nationals.
The embassy said it has been discussing various issues, including cases with humanitarian dimensions, with the Government of Qatar.
In recent weeks, Arora called on the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs HE Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi, Attorney General HE Dr Ali bin Fatees al-Marri, Assistant Minister in Charge of Services Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Rashid bin Khalifa al-Khalifa, Assistant Minister in Charge of Asian Affairs HE Mohamed bin Abdullah bin Mutib al-Rumaihi, under-scretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Husain al-Mulla, to follow up these issues.
