Shell has received the “Project Management Company of the Year” award during the Association for Project Management (APM) Awards 2014 held recently in London. The award recognises Shell’s “better and safer” delivery of capital projects and the company’s “commitment to project excellence,” as well as its world-class project professionals trained by Shell Project Academy.
As a key part of Shell’s social investment strategy to support the development of the project management community in Qatar, Qatar Shell said it is bringing the expertise to the country through the Tafawoq Project Management Centre of Excellence.
Founded by partners Qatar Petroleum (QP), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), and Qatar Shell, Tafawoq aims to develop the competencies of the country’s project management community to support the delivery of Qatar’s portfolio of capital investment projects in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Tafawoq director Bader al-Jaidah said, “This top global APM award is a testimony to Shell’s global leadership in project management and to the successful model of Shell’s Project Academy. It is also in recognition to Tafawoq achievements, having received international accreditation by APM for its ‘Essentials of Project Management’ course earlier this year.”
Tafawoq was built on the principles of Shell’s Project Academy, an internationally-recognised and accredited programme that ensures that project professionals receive executive education and training opportunities. It also draws on QP’s experience in building large-scale capital projects.
Shell and QP have partnered to deliver Pearl GTL, the world’s largest gas-to-liquids project, in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Meanwhile, HBKU will be the permanent home of Tafawoq to ensure its long-term sustainability and ongoing connection to academic research in the field of project management.
Al-Jaidah said, “Tafawoq is developing a strong reputation as the leading project management centre in the Gulf region. The number of trained project professionals across Qatar and the GCC is steadily growing and has now reached more than 300 participants. Our aim is to develop a sustainable project management community that will lead the nation into a prosperous future, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”
“Tafawoq is laying the foundation of a thriving project community by hosting regular community events that act as a platform for project professionals to connect, share knowledge, and discuss hot topics related to the industry,” he added.
