Known as ‘Barrister Antulay’, he was the state’s first Muslim chief minister, from June 1980 to January 1982 and a loyalist of then Congress president and prime minister Indira Gandhi.
The party’s most prominent face in the Konkan region, Antulay served as a central minister in 1995 and later in the first term of the government of prime minister Manmohan Singh.
“We plan to hold the funeral ceremonies tomorrow in his village Ambet in Raigad district,” his nephew Mushtaque Antulay said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said expressed grief and said Antulay was one of the “tall leaders of the Congress” in the state.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi said he will be remembered for his commitment to the party in its trying times. The entire Congress Party stands with the Antulay family in this hour of grief, she said in a message.
“Antulay was one of the most significant leaders from Maharashtra who had a long public innings,” she said.
“Antulay was a brilliant legal mind and a committed member of the Congress party. He made significant contribution to the nation as a chief minister and union minister and parliamentarian.”
