Qatar ‘committed’ to promoting and protecting human rights

QNA/Geneva

Qatar said it is paying increasing attention to the issue of business and human rights as well as the UN “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework and Guiding Principles .”

It noted that the promotion and protection of human rights was a strategic choice and cornerstone for comprehensive reform policy pursued by the State.

This came in a statement delivered by HE Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim al-Thani, Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the high-level meeting of the third session of the Forum of business and human rights in Geneva.

He noted that Qatar’s policy was reflected in the establishment of the national working group on the issue of business and human rights, chaired by the human rights department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Trade, Ministry of Environment, Qatar Petroleum, Diar Company and Ooredoo Company.

He explained that the mandate of the national team, which comprises all stakeholders, was to promote and raise awareness about United Nations guidelines on business and human rights, and including them in national frameworks.

Qatar organised a training workshop on “business and human rights” last November, he added.

Qatar, through its membership in the Human Rights Council and other UN and regional organisations, would spare no effort in contributing actively to support efforts to promote the guidelines on business and human rights, he stressed.
