Twenty percent of school students suffer from asthma in Qatar, a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) has said quoting a study, local daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
The study was carried out by Hamad Medical Corporation which surveyed students in the age category of six to 10 years.
D Ibrahim al-Junahi, professor of children clinical diseases at WCMC-Q and chief of the children chest unit at Hamad General Hospital, stated that there are 13 clinics in the unit which examine around 12,000 children every year. Out of them, about 5,000 students are found to be suffering from asthma which is an indication of the rise of the disease.
He noted that the clinics use a very modern device to diagnose the disease to measure the rate of breathing accurately and the ability of the lungs to get rid of gases and pump oxygen to blood effectively.
