Two-time world champion Erik Varga of Slovenia’s reasserted his class by winning the senior men’s trap gold medal at the Qatar Open Shotgun Championship.
At the Losail Shooting Range yesterday, the 39-year-old Slovenian looked in fine touch in the qualifying rounds and carried his form into the final as he shot down all the 15 clay pigeons in the gold medal round to beat 2010 World Cup gold medallist Mauro de Filippis of Italy and collect the top prize of $7,000.
“It was very difficult for me as I was not well. It was a tough completion here as all the shooters are very experienced, but I am very happy with my performance. It was a very good event at the start of the season,” Varga, who won said.
De Filippis, who finished fourth in the double trap also, said: “It was a very tough final. It was like an Olympic final, but I am very happy with my performance in Doha as I got silver medal today and finished fourth in the double trap earlier.”
Two-time world championship silver medalist Shanz Waldemar of Germany clinched the bronze medal defeated former junior world champion Kuwait’s Abdulrehamn al-Faihan by one shot in a tense shoot-off during which he shot down 32 targets against 31 of the Kuwaiti shooter.
“It was long shoot-out, it was as very interesting and exhausting event but in the end I think I was the lucky one. I appreciate the things here I am very happy with my bronze medal,” Waldemar said.
“I know Abdulrehamn as we have some very good rounds in the past also… he is a very good shooter. It was my third time here and I must say the conditions were superb here and hopefully I will be back next year,” the 46-year-old German said.
In the junior trap section, Italy’s Luca Miotto won the gold and Ruslan Berdov of Khazakstan claimed silver medal. The bronze medal went to Angelo Scalzone of Italy.
Over 250 shooters from 33 countries including Olympic and world champions took part in the double trap, skeet and trap categories of the eight-day long event.
