Three new central markets at Al Wakrah, Umm Salal and Al Sayliyah are scheduled to be launched by mid next year, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) announced yesterday.
Contracts have been signed for the proposed central markets which would supply residents of the areas with vegetables, meat, livestock and poultry. The markets will also have bank branches, commercial outlets and accommodations for the workers employed there.
On behalf of MEC, the contract was signed by Yahya bin Saeed al-Nuaimi, the assistant undersecretary for commercial affairs, and Fahd Rashid al-Kaabi, CEO of Manaqteq Company, in addition to a number of companies that would carry out the project.  
The tender of Al Wakrah Central market project was given to Builders Trading and Contracting Company to execute the project on an area of 59,393sqm. It includes a main market, a slaughterhouse, a mosque, an administrative building and an electricity substation. The main market will have fish, poultry and meat markets, in addition to a grocery, a flower shop and a bank branch and workers’ accommodations.
The contract for the Central Market at Umm Salal was awarded to Marco Trading and Contracting Company which will execute the project on a space of 19,999sqm.
The contract for the central market at Al Sayliyah was awarded to Al-Muntasir Trading and Contracting Company to be implemented on a space of 20,001sqm.
Al-Nuaimi pointed out that the signing of the contracts was in response to a study conducted on the needs of the inhabitants of the corresponding areas and to spare them of the trouble of driving all the way to Doha Central Market to buy fish, meat and vegetables.
