Contest for STEM award announced

Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMU-Q), in association with Maersk Oil Qatar, has announced the competition for the second annual STEM Educator of the Year award and cash prize for Qatar’s top high school teacher of math and sciences.
“The STEM Educator of the Year competition is designed to recognise teachers for excellence in educating young Qataris in STEM disciplines — science, technology, engineering and math — which are essential for advancing Qatar’s development of a knowledge-based economy,” said Dr Hamid Parsaei, director of academic outreach and professor of mechanical engineering at TAMU-Q.
Parsaei, who chairs the award selection committee, said the competition builds on last year’s contest for the STEM Educator of the Year prize, which was awarded to Faiza Musa, an educator for more than 25 years who teaches chemistry at Al Bayan Educational Complex for Girls.
Sheikh Faisal al-Thani, deputy managing director at Maersk Oil Qatar, said, “We are delighted to continue this robust partnership with TAMU-Q, which supports the country’s progress and development towards its vision. Through the award we remain committed to championing and supporting high teaching standards in STEM disciplines, and preparing the next generation of young scientists and engineers in Qatar.”
Dr Mark H Weichold, dean and CEO, TAMU-Q, said the competition for STEM Educator of the Year represents direct efforts to support Qatar’s human and social development, which, through engineers and scientists, will drive the country’s economic and environmental
development.
