Qatar Charity was the first humanitarian organisation to distribute urgent food and medical aid in the Yemen city of Aden, a statement issued by the charity said.
The distribution was made despite significant difficulties in reaching the needy, and benefited thousands of affected people.
The organisation is continuing to provide relief for the benefit of 30,000 affected people in Aden, including food baskets to 35,000 households in the city of Hodeidah.
Ibrahim Ali, Director of the Department of Relief at QC, explained that the project fell within the framework of the “Yemen ... We are with you”, campaign, which is seeking to raise QR 36.5mn in order to provide assistance to more than 1.26mn people, who are suffering from severe shortages in the areas of food and medical supplies.
Ali added that the relief materials in Aden covered both regions of Al Mualla and Tawahi, and the Directorate of Sheikh Othman, which is divided into five regions: Omar Al Mukhtar, Sanafir, Seela, Dar Saad and Kabihan, in addition to the Directorate of Mansoura.
The food baskets consisted of essential items such as rice, sugar, cooking oil and beans, in addition to fresh meals.
Ready meals were distributed to prisoners in Mansoura prison in Aden, in addition to providing them with food stuffs for cooking.
Large quantities of seventeen varieties of medicines and medical consumables, including drugs and treatments for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems were also provided. The medical items were delivered to Aden governmental hospitals, as well as a number of private hospitals.
The humanitarian crisis experienced by Yemen for the past few months has exacerbated the humanitarian situation in various fields, particularly those that affect the daily life of citizens. Hundreds of thousands of people are without water and electricity, food and fuel are scarce, and there has been an almost total collapse of medical services due to electrical outages and lack of medicines and medical disposables.
Worst affected are the provinces of Sana'a, Aden, Mukalla, Lahj, Marib, Taiz, Hodeidah, Dalea and Saada.
UN statistics also reveal that more than 60% of Yemeni people have been living on humanitarian aid for several years, and this figure is believed to have risen dramatically in light of the current situation. According to local sources in Yemen, food and medicine stocks have decreased sharply, with many items set to disappear from the local market over the next few weeks, meaning that the country is facing an imminent and major humanitarian catastrophe. In light of this QC has called upon all charitable and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action for the relief of those threatened by hunger and disease.
